Just thought I’d post a quick update. I know, I know I’ve once again neglected my poor blog.. mostly because I’ve recently become addicted to spending time getting my photos situated on Flickr .  Anyways, I will finally be moving in to my new place relatively soon, and I’ve slowly started to make the transition by taking small amounts of stuff over little by little. Well, except for my adventure hauling a mattress up a flight of stairs.. don’t ask.  Naturally, I was concerned about my collectibles, and what was I  to do? load up the car and carry over the Jem dolls by hand, of course. So yep.. there you have it, whats the first thing I move when I’m finally getting established in my own place? Jem dolls! Neccessities people, come on.   The shelves visible in the photo were already there, so I figured they’d be useful as a good spot for displaying at least a small part of my collection of 80s treasures.  Based on that one simple thought, I’ve pretty much concluded that I will tranform that spare room into an all-out totally 80s lounge area / collectibles room / den. More details to come. Expect lots of Pink.. and at least one massive photo of Molly Ringwald.

New from Hasbro – Jemgirl’s dream house (prototype) May 21, 2009

No, it doesn’t feature an elevator operated by string, well, there is an elevator- but thank god its not operated by string, although at times it feels like it is. However, it is pink enough to give Barbie a run for her money. Its all new from Hasbro – its Jemgirl’s dream house! Well, let me clarify a little.. Technically, this isn’t my dream house, not by a long shot. Actually, I’m currently in the process of getting ready to move, so the title is sort of ironic, if not prophetic. On a whim, I  decided to take some photos of my apartment as it is at this very moment, and capture some of the great instances of random 80s awesomeness that are visible to me on a daily basis.

Ah, my never ending, overflowing collection of VHS tapes. They dominate the living room in every way. The first thing you see when you enter my place is a toppling tower stacked nearly to the ceiling with videos. Some people are puzzled, wondering why such a large storage space would be put to use crammed with heaps of a now defunct media format. But I just laugh and think ‘Oh,  the  BETA tapes are in the closet’ . I know they’re confused by the lack of presence of DVDs. Look closely, however, and you’ll see that this truly was housing DVDs originally, but was overrun by VHS.

The shelves embrace an eclectic mix of 80’s cartoons, obscure movies and various Disney animation compilations, among other things.

This isn’t really a proper home for my VHS collection, though. Its become  as unruly as a bad 80’s hairstyle.  They’re all over the place, scattered around.

Perched atop a small bookshelf in the hall, is my collection of Sears Wishbooks. Which would normally be kept safe in a better position, but they’ve been out frequently being used as reference guides. They’re  the ultimate research manual when it comes not only to toys, but housewares, clothing, and the overall aesthetic of a certain time.  Also visible are a couple misplaced books.  A collector’s doll guide (which I purchased because it briefly discusses Jem) and a very cool book simply titled “Hal Lifson’s 1966!” which is a  picture packed retrospective of mid-60s pop culture.

More collectibles guides. I love that there is a book titled “Contemporary fast food drinking glass collectibles” I ran across it in a little independent book shop, and I had to have it.  To the right is my massive book of 80s advertising.  Its pretty much about 5 pounds worth of solid print ads ranging every category you can think of. I love Taschen.

A view of the hallway. Yes, the two large tubs Party Popple sits beside  are full of 80s toys. The top one is full to the brim with my entire vintage My little Pony collection.

A sampling of the various contents of my room  that  make it look like either that of a 6 year old girl, or the dumping ground of a closed out  Toys R Us circa 1985.  A few Care Bears keep Rainbow Brite and Star lite company in the vintage red chair.

A couple items of my Jem collection waiting to get packed away. A Jem dresser set, and the Rock n Romance board game. To the right is my Hasbro shipping box, which holds the collection of Jem Wrist Rocks I previously wrote about, and a couple other light weight, fragile Jem items, including party favor bags and Jem sunglasses. I have two of the 25th Anniversary repro My little Pony collector’s sets. The one pictured above features Blue Belle, Butterscotch and Cotton Candy.

Gizmo, a Pound Puppy and the Swarovski eyed Love a Lot bear hanging out with the rest of their plush toy pals.

The other set of My Little Ponies decorate my DVD player,

while the puffling Popple Daniel gave me hangs out by my stereo.

A vintage metal Care Bears waste bin I picked up at Goodwill a few years ago.  I’m inclined to think that it was part of one of those theme bedroom sets, with the toy chests, curtains, and linens and whatnot. Another instance of the Sears Wishbook coming in handy!

A totally awesome Totally Minnie poster circa 1988.

This Mickey and Minnie design, along with another very similar one of the pair standing back to back, was on everything from puzzles to metal tins to posters and Mylar balloons. Strangely enough, this particular poster I won at a fair only a few years ago.

Cheer bear pokes her head out from my closet in the form of character slippers. Yes, thats right ; I have Care Bear slippers. And I wear them.

Don’t forget to say hi to Lloyd Dobler on your way out.

Some randomness from another room: The thermos collection.  a RotJ figure. A Rose Petal Place lunchbox. There are plenty of other metal lunchboxes stored in the closet. I’m hoping to find a way to display them in my new place.

A few interesting things here. An original display for the 1991 McDonald’s Happy Meal featuring ‘Hook’. A couple new old stock Mattel Heart Family dolls. A basket full of vintage GI Joe and Star Wars figures, and a couple McDonald’s Halloween Happy Meal pails.  Unfortunately nothing is organized, yet again. This room functions as both a dumping ground for the collectibles we bring home, and a bedroom for me and my fiance. After the move I hope to have both of those spaces separate and clearly defined.

Old board games stacked up high on the closet shelf.

In the living room, the NES lives harmoniously with the Wii fit.

To finish the photo tour off, how about some more VHS.

More VHS??

Surely you’re think since this is the last photo, it must be the last of my VHS collection. Far from it. Try under the bed and digging through half a closet full as well.

I plan to update this entry with a follow-up post after I’ve moved and settled into my new place. I’ll have a new space, with a new look and feel to it, and I’m hoping I’ll find the perfect way to marry style and my quirky self expression. Although, I don’t find myself to be all that quirky, I’m just me. But, then again, maybe its because I live in my own world that I don’t see it.

As I walked from room to room, impulsively trying to capture evident pieces of my expression of love for the 80s, I noticed that it really does say something. When I looked at  the photos all together, I realized that these things mean so much more than just an ever growing collection of junk. Sure, I almost desperately hoard anything I can get my hands on that was produced between 1980 and 1989 (with a little early 90s thrown in for good measure), but I also feel each one of these things I find pieces together a tapestry of a by gone era. A time I’d like to remember and hold on to. You can’t live in the past, but you can remember its legacy. To me all these things feel like home.

Planter’s Cheez Balls December 28, 2008

In the ranks of highly coveted discontinued snack foods, few rate higher than Planter’s Cheez Balls. Far tastier than their other artificial cheese puff counterparts, they became my go-to junk food as a kid. Nothing was better than a can of Cheez Balls and a stack of cartoons on VHS.

Vintage Cheez Balls can

They were in production for several decades, and re-labeled with “Cheez Mania”  in the 90’s. Then, around 2001 or 2002 (if memory serves me right) they ceased production. It was one of those things that hit me out of the blue. I suddenly realized while walking the grocery store one day that Cheez balls were no where in sight, and in fact, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen them available.

Over the years I frequently longed for their cheezy goodness. Cheetos and  generic Cheese puffs just couldn’t compare. Nothing had that flavor I craved. I desperately began scouring the internet for them, when, after many a Google search, I encountered a piece of information that was paramount in my re-discovery of them.  Many fans of this product had conclusive information that it had been officially discontinued. However, there seemed to be occasional sightings across the US in which people had found them exclusively at convenience stores, and oddly enough, Blockbuster. I remember running across a feature on the MSN homepage one day.  In it, they discussed the most-wanted discontinued foods. I was pleased to see that I was not alone in  my desire for this product to spring back to life. I read that piece a few months ago… and then, just a week later..  I hit the jackpot.

One afternoon not long ago, I was having kind of a bad day. So my Fiance Daniel and I  treated  ourselves to lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant, after that we  decided to walk over to the blockbuster in the same parking lot.  We watch a lot of movies, so we’re frequently present at this location.

I was getting ready to leave when he stopped me. He was hidden by a shelf of snack foods.  I heard his voice call out to me . “Laura! guess what I have?” All in a moment, a whirlwind of thoughts rushed through my head. “No, it couldn’t be. Here? But, I’ve never seen them. Cheez Balls? I just read about them! Oh.. it would be a dream come true. Its been so many years!”

Daniel then proceeded to reveal himself and extended forth his arms. He was grasping a can of Planter’s Cheez balls. I squealed. My heart was racing with excitement. I felt a rush of happiness.  He then pointed out to me a small shelf, which was stocked with a meager amount of Planter’s snack products. THEY DO EXIST!  I quickly grabbed 3 cans and headed to the check out. I mentioned to the manager my excitement of finding them. He said that he too, had read the same article from the previous week. He said he knew they’d go over well seeing as he is the only one around who has them.

At last!

At last!

Later that night I indulged in that delicious, savory cheez (which is close to cheese, but not quite the same taste) flavor for the first time in years.

Since then, I have managed to keep one can in reserve.  Unfortunatley, as I had suspected.. they haven’t resurfaced. Someone else bought the few remaining cans, and I had the majority of them in my possesion.  I do hope they are re-ordered. Otherwise I may have to ask the management to do so. I found further evidence today of the demand for Cheez balls. Check out this auction currently running on Ebay. $25.00 per can for this luxury. Anyone who has actually taken the time to read this obviously has the same goal that I did. So, take hope from this article. Yes, they do exist.

Jem Wrist Rocks 1987 December 23, 2008

I recently acquired a shipping carton and full set of the Jem “Wrist Rocks” watches from 1987.

This particular carton was destined for Seattle (which is an added bonus for me, because I’m a Seattleite)

Apparently although the item itself has no mention of it, the watches were also somehow related to famed Japanese toy company Takara.

Inside we find the complete set of 3 NIP watches. The digital watches have  themed designs, featuring a zebra print keyboard, a  neon orange cassette tape, and an LP with  “Jem” cover art.

Wrist Rocks were available in the Jem line during 1987, towards the end of its run.

The commercial features a trio of ultra-80s looking girls, sporting side ponies, and hideous hair bows.  As they  recite the jingle for the toys in a sing-songy manner, they prance around the stage performing a dance and shaking their hair. I miss those days.

Wow, its certainly been a while.  Obviously you can tell I’m rusty at this by my terrible pun about a certain mid 90’s Don Bluth movie… I should apologize for how bad that title is..

Its that time of year.. when the weather gets colder, the leaves change color, and the aroma of turkey and douglas firs are just around the corner. The most nostalgic time of the year is approaching, and I find myself already craving Sears Wishbooks and Christmas cookies.  Due to these reasons, (and a slight case of loneliness and boredom.. I’m always depressed in the fall)  I’ve decided to make a commitment to blogging this pre-holiday season.  Unfortunately, my sudden resurgence of interest in blogging was forced to be put on hold for the past month or so because of a faulty wireless card (Stupid, Stupid HP!) but now I’m all revved up and ready to post lots of 80s randomness.

I’ve accumulated so many miscellaneous pieces of blog-worthy treasure, I’ve decided the best way would be to attempt to organize them at least into mostly cohesive posts.  As the name of my blog would suggest, I’m a huge fan of the Hasbro dolls and Sunbow cartoon series, Jem. While I’ve been a fan all my life, I’ve just recently started to expand my collection of Jem related merchandise, so I hope to make that the focal point of a series of posts in the near future.  But for now,  I’ll let Barbie steal the spotlight.

I picked this up over the summer actually, and never had a chance to post about it.

1988’s Superstar Barbie, MIB.

I was thrilled to find this again, it was probably one of my first and favorite Barbies as a kid. I love how iconic 80’s Barbie looks here. So over the top and glamorous. The stylish Ferrari she cruises around with Ken (and a young Jennifer Love Hewitt) in is pretty sweet too.

I also lucked out in finding a boxed Barbie Ice Cream Shoppe. The highlight of this playset is the built in Easy-Bake Oven style ice cream maker. I stumbled across this at a Goodwill, and couldn’t help picking it up despite the fact that its in a massive box and I have no room for it whatsoever. I couldn’t resist the packaging, I love the 80’s color scheme. Plus I vividly remember seeing commercials for this as a kid, and desperately wanting it.  I was like a little kid all over again, lugging this giant, (and heavy!) box up to the register with a huge smile on my face. Upon arriving home I was pleased to see that all the contents were still intact. However, I don’t think there is a chance in hell I’ll actually try to make ice cream with it though, no matter how thoroughly its cleaned. I cringe at the thought of there being 20 + year old sticky residue in there.   Although… it would make for an interesting post.

We’re Engaged! August 24, 2008

Smurf couple on top of our bedroom bookcase. In the center is the beautiful vintage ring box Daniel presented my engagement ring in when he proposed. (also, while you're looking, note the shirt tales figure in back, so cute!)

Daniel and I got engaged a couple weeks ago.. and we found these adorable bride and groom Smurf figurines.  Actually, we found them before we got officially engaged, but we couldn’t resist them. We already knew we wanted to be together.  Honestly, how in the world could I resist a guy who was kneeling down by a glass cabinet full of Smurfs (They’re not second hand.. we picked them up at Magic Mouse Toys in downtown Seattle) calling out ‘Yeah, we’ll take the Smurfette bride and one of the Smurf grooms over there’  Those words were music to my ears.

Laura and Daniel

Unfortunately, Daniel and I only had a few weeks together over the summer. We spent a great deal of time thrifting, and we had amazing luck. Now that I have time (more than enough time. Its driving me crazy. Really. ) I’ve decided to get back into blogging.  I simply have too much stuff not to justify posting some of it.  I can only hope that I’ll this kind of luck during the fall, but for now I’ve got so much material to write about, I really should catch up a bit first.  I must say that I’m surprised at the amount of MIB/MOC  toys we found this summer, I rarely would find even one a year. I acquired a couple  of 80’s Barbies, and two sets of Mattel Heart family dolls that looked like they’d stayed on the shelf for the past 15-20 years.  I guess for now I just have to find the motivation to attempt to begin the massive amount of pictures I must take, and creative words to find.. and due to my constant state of stress, that may prove to be a bit difficult.  Really though, I know you’re all excited to see treasures like Michael Jackson puffy stickers, right?

After these messages.. we’ll be right back July 7, 2008

Just thought I’d let everyone know that Daniel has arrived. That would be the reason I haven’t had any time to post anything new lately.  On a positive note, we’ve been very fortunate this week in finding tons of great thrift junk. I’ll be sure to do a post to catch up.  I can’t believe the luck we’ve had just in the week he’s been here. I’m pleased to say that I have some boxed items from a forgotten mattel doll line coming up, along with miscellaneous findings including.. CPK, vintage Barbie, Disney, Fraggle Rock and Hugga Bunch stuff. In the meantime..

Jemgirl and the great video store goldmine – Part 1 June 20, 2008

Several months ago, Daniel and I stumbled across an old independent video store we had never been to before.  Upon entering, we discovered aisles and aisles of VHS tapes, as far as the eye could see. It is so rare these days to come across a video store that has a large variety of tapes in stock.

We headed straight for the kids/family section.  Popples! Care Bears! Pound Puppies! Strawberry Shortcake! Voltron! they had a little of everything. And not just a single copy of each, oh no, most of the iconic 80s series had an offering of several volumes available.  I was ecstatic.  Even better were the rental prices, which were next to nothing. So we walked out of there with a huge stack of tapes, which made for a good weekend.

We continued this new tradition a couple more times,  proudly cashing-in on the untapped plethora of 80’s animated goodness.  Unfortunately one time some woman made the mistake of embarrassing me by saying it was a shame I wasn’t getting anything for myself, which, me being a sensitive girl, was upsetting.  But I bounced right back, and discovered it was actually a pretty cool place.  A couple of the other employees who worked there were glad to see someone checking the tapes out, and agreed that they were now in fact rare treasures.

I found this store in a rather unpleasantway. My grandma was in the hospital, and I discovered this store en route to seeing her.  It was an upsetting time for me. Discovering this nostaligic little place seemed like a time warp (cue the singing!)  everytime I went back.  I think it was God’s way of bringing me a little comfort via magnetic tape and plastic clamshell boxes.

Thanks to my amazing boyfriend’s online discovery, we discovered that this store was closing. Which was sad, but exciting.  It was an opportunity to make the contents of that video store my own.   I loved going to video stores when I was a kid. Not like today when the only option you have is whatever crappy new release title DVDs  you find at Blockbuster that you’re sure to forget by next week.

Remember how great it was to be able to pick up several tapes at once on a weekend as a special?  My usual routine as a little kid was to stop at Crazy Mike’s video for some Jem and Rainbow Brite tapes and then go next door to Safeway for pizza or a frozen kid’s meal.

I also loved it when you’d be able to buy those little individual bags of warm popcorn for $1 (amazingly enough there still is one small store near me that does this) .  Such good memories.  Since this store that was closing was the closest thing I had to recreating that experience from my childhood (except without Jem tapes, unfortunately) I decided to throw logic out the door and stock pile as many tapes as I could. Nevermind where I was going to put them.  If it gets to be too much, I suppose we could go ahead and fill the entire bedroom with VHS tapes.  But, there really isn’t anywhere else for us to sleep. And that couch really isn’t big enough for two people.  Here are the results of my round.  I purchased a total of 36 VHS tapes.

I’ve broken them down in to smaller categories for better visibility.

VHS tapes

My findings in the comedy section were quite good.  Rare Disney clamshells,  Terrible forgotten sequels, and some undiscovered made for TV gems.   An excellent example of your basic video store classics.  Speaking of which, there is rumor that my beloved Daniel may perhaps be considering a return to blogging focusing on that very subject.  God knows I have enough ammo for him to get started with. I know I’m not the only one who thinks that would be awesome!

VHS desciptions L to R:
Hiding Out with Jon Cryer 1987
Like father like son Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron 1987
The boy who could fly, 1986 with 2 child sitcom stars for the price of one! Mindy Cohn and (drumroll, please) Our man, Fred Savage!
A night in the life of Jimmy Reardon starring River Phoenix 1988
Happy Together a.k.a. the other movie titled after a 60’s pop song that Patrick Dempsey was in.
TRON Classic. Isn’t that such a great clamshell box? I love the cover art.
Night Crossing a rather obscure 1981 Disney film.

The Peanut Butter Soultion 1985 family fantasy
Heart and Souls with Robert Downey Jr. 1993* (because Daniel keeps telling me I should see it)
Rock and Roll High School Forever 1991 sequel to Rock and Roll High School starring none other than.. Corey Feldman!
Big girls don’t cry.. they get even! 1992. I picked this up only to confirm that it is the same movie that I’ve been trying to remember the title of for about 5-10 years now. It is pretty bad as I recall. Not bad in a good way, bad in a ‘I’d rather watch My super sweet sixteen ‘way.
The Night Before Keanu Reeves and Lori Laughlin. 1988
High School USA This is my biggest prize out of the lot. 1983 TV movie starring (again, drumroll please..) Nancy McKeon, MICHEAL J. FOX (we love him. ) Todd Bridges and Dana Plato among others. I think this one might be getting its own seperate entry upon viewing.
Mannequin Too: On the move! 1991 sequel to Mannequin starring Kristy Swanson.

There is so much here that its probably too much for one post, but for now I’ll give a brief overview of the Kid-Vids I picked up, too:

VHS

Captain Planet vol. 1
Noozles I loved watching this on Nick Jr.
Pirates of Dark Water
Hanna Barbera All-stara: Dino and Juliet
Yogi’s great escape
Pound Puppies
My pet monster (animated series)
Wonderful World of Disney
Care Bears
G.I. Joe the movie ( a Celebrity’s Just for kids release. :) yay! )
Blinky Bill
Faeries A Family Home Entertainment release. I’ve never heard of it, but I just noticed on the IMDB page that Brian Froud was involved, so now I’m really intrigued to see it.
Popples
Care Bears family treasure chest (in an oversized Kideo Video box)
Voltron
Rainbow Brite’s San Diego zoo adventure A rare live action TV special featuring Rainbow Brite costume characters from 1983.

Last but not least is the Christmas section.  I LOVE Christmas, and one of my favorite Christmas time traditions is to watch as many holiday related movies and specials as possible.

Tiny Toons: It’s a wonderful Christmas special
Doug’s secret Christmas
All I want for Christmas
Yogi Bear’s All-star comdedy Christmas caper
The Bear who slept through Christmas
Benji’s very own Christmas story Excellent Children’s Video library clamshell release.

Ok, I know I’m still holding out on revealing what my awesome secret find is. I’ve been SUPER busy, so I haven’t had time to give it the attention it deserves. Anyway, I stumbled across this youtube clip, because well, as most of you know (or can guess) I am huge Disney fan.  My favorite being 80s Disney, naturally.  So this clip serves two purposes.. For one, I’ll give you a hint: There is a clue to my secret during the opening credits.  Secondly… make sure to watch to at least two minutes in.  David Hasselhoff in a sparkly outfit singing in a Disney parade. I think that needed to be brought to everyone’s attention.  I know you’ll thank me for that.  Oh, also…depending on how much Hoff you can handle, check out this other clip from the same program:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgQMo09EcLo

I promise you’ll be entertained. Or disturbed. Or both.  Hmm, that wasn’t a very nice sentiment to leave you with.  I vow to include more sincere posts dedicated to my love of Disney in the near  future.  But until then, enjoy the fine examples of real Disney magic.

More thrift junk June 11, 2008

I had a pretty decent round-up of junk at the thrift store the other day,  and I could have spent time doing an actual detailed account of these items. However, I found something today to top all of this. It’s a pretty random, rare find.. so I’ve got to save up my creative energy to focus on that.  I won’t  reveal too much about it, though. You’re always supposed to leave them wanting more, right? But, I suppose I’ll give you a  little hint: It involves a star from a certain beloved 80s sitcom. So, I figured I’d just do a quick update. I like to share my happiness with all of you, so I guess its better just to post a quick recap then to have you miss out on the awesomeness of things like……..

GI Joe thermos, MASK thermos

Vintage G.I. Joe (1986) and MASK  (1985) thermoses! An excellent find at a mere .75 a piece.

Even though I’m an 80s girl at heart, how could I resist picking up items featuring a couple of  classic 80s boy licenses? Daniel and I have acquired quite a nice random assortment of 80s lunchboxes and thermoses.  I think it’d be cool to somehow display them in a kitchen. That is, if we’re lucky enough to end up getting a place that has a kitchen big enough for the both of us, and the collection.

Up next is a nice little Disney item. “Fluppy Dogs at the beach” Golden book from 1986.  Aww, the Fluppies were so cute, I loved them. I had a purple and white plush one when I was little.  For those who are unaware,  Disney’s Fluppy Dogs  was a 1986 one-hour animated special. It was intended to air as part of the Disney Afternoon block, but the pilot special wasn’t too successful, so plans for continuation of the series were scraped, unfortunately. The toy line, on the other hand, did prove to be at least somewhat profitable for Disney, with merchandise such as plush toys and books continuing to be produced throughout 1986, or possibly a few years longer.

Fluppy Dogs book

Finishing off this batch are two final items:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV tray, Smurfs album

A metal Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV tray from 1988, and a Smurfs sing-along album.
